Barnard Castle

A few minutes’ walk across the river and you’re in the centre of the historic town of Barnard Castle, with its many excellent independent cafes, fab bakeries, shops, takeaways, pubs and restaurants. There is a traditional market on the cobbles each Wednesday morning and a bustling farmer’s market on the first Saturday of every month for fresh local produce.

You can explore the ruins of the town’s 12th century castle, an English Heritage site, or head to The Bowes Museum, a magnificent 19th century French chateau-style building on the edge of the town which houses the wide range of art treasures collected by founders John and Josephine Bowes.

For those who want to explore this wonderful area further, the town is surrounded by pretty villages, woodlands, valleys and open moors across both the Durham and North Yorkshire Dales.
